Being Made Redundant is a Gift

26-10-2009
Dr. Timothy Butler, Director of Career Development at Harvard Business School has uncovered that getting fired or being made redundant in your life may at first feel like a crisis; it can actually turn into the best thing that has ever happened to you. more...
At Sparc Teams we assist others in seeing their time off from full-time work as a gift.  How often do you get a chance in life to take your 'blinkers' [horse blinders] off to breathe for a moment to see the world anew again. I know when I am working in an organisation, I am completely engrossed in its work and the tasks I need to do.  I rarely take a chance to reflect on my needs/wants/desires/potential.

During this 'free' time, Dr. Butlers advises, we can see ourselves with "new eyes and new ears, ask what is happening, and attend to our direct, raw experience. We begin to listen better and are open to new types of information."

This increased awareness can assist us in learning more about what we really want in life.  This perhaps inconvenient but much needed break from full-time work could be a time where we identify our passions, purpose in life or as Dr. Butler refers to it as "patterns of the self".

In knowing your patterns of self "we learn which interests are most meaningful for us and what business or organizational roles will allow us to express them".  In other words, in knowing our passions and what we like doing we can make better decisions in our new career choices, find work which we love and become happier, healthier and more valued members of our community.

Or, you can just continue down the same stressful uninspired path. It's your choice. We believe that would be a huge waste of your potential and a loss for all of us.

For the book.
